I am a native of Jeonju, who is attracted to Hanok (traditional Korean house) and aspired to operate a Hanok guesthouse. Thanks to Hongsi, I got to live my dream.
The structure was built with cypress and red clay in 1940. As an astringent persimmon becomes flavorful and sweet over time, this old house has changed beautifully by infusing a fresh, modern feel. ‘Hongsi’ means ‘soft persimmon’ in Korean.
In the autumn, the persimmon and pomegranate trees are full of fruits and reveal gorgeous hues. Persimmons and pomegranates hanging on tree branches may look unfamiliar to urban dwellers. It is so rewarding to hear that they invigorate themselves in Hanok and its surroundings.
I hope Hongsi will remain as a scrap of my guests’ memories.
